St Ursula’s has a strong commitment to the values of Saint Angela Merici.  Angela advocated that love, compassion and kindness be integral in our educative work.  The provision of a Counsellor at St Ursula’s to actively support and promote the social and emotional well-being of students is therefore in harmony with Angela’s philosophy. The College Counsellor works closely with the pastoral care team in supporting students.

Confidentiality

The counselling service is a confidential process offered to students.  The student’s privacy is treated with the utmost respect.  However, this process is bound by duty of care requirements and the Children and Young Persons Act (1998).  Consequently, the College Counsellor has a mandatory reporting obligation to disclose information and break confidentiality when there are reasonable grounds to believe that:

  • A student is at risk of harm to herself
  • A student is at risk of harm from others (ie verbal or physical abuse, neglect, sexual assault, domestic violence)
  • A student is at risk of harming another individual
  • A serious crime has been committed
  • A subpoena is served on the College Counsellor to present documents at Court.

Referrals

Referrals are generally made to the Counsellor through the Year Coordinators. Students can also make an appointment with the Counsellor in person or by leaving a request in the locked box at the Counselling Room (at the front of Brescia). The College Counsellor is available Wednesday, Thursday and Friday and can also provide a range of referral options to outside professionals.
