Introduction

St Ursula’s College is proactive in ensuring that the Catholic faith, tradition and culture are actively fostered and celebrated. Founded in the tradition of St Angela Merici and the Ursuline Sisters, the College sees the religious education of its students as being of the utmost importance. In addition to the formal Religious Education curriculum, Catholic values and the Ursuline charism are integrated across all curriculum areas and permeate every aspect of College life.  All students include Religious Education as a core component of their program of study. St Ursula’s follows the Archdiocesan Religious Education Curriculum, Faithful to God, Faithful to People, as authorised by the Archbishop of Sydney, George Cardinal Pell and which is accredited as the NSW Board Endorsed Course – Catholic Studies. Catholic Studies allows students to access the rich traditions of Catholicism, its stories, its experiences and its teachings; and provides opportunities for celebration of the life of Christ and the presence of God in the world today.

Course Outline

St Ursula’s follows the Archdiocesan Religious Education Curriculum and uses the student texts, To Know, Worship and Love. Each year students complete units of study drawn from the five key strands that make up the Religious Education Curriculum, Faithful to God, Faithful to People, Years 7-12.

  1. Scripture and Jesus
  2. Church and Community
  3. God, Religion and Life
  4. Prayer, Liturgy and Sacraments
  5. Morality and Justice

In addition to their text, To Know, Worship and Love, students make use of the Catholic Youth Bible (NRSV International Edition) received in Year 7 and Catholic Ethical Thinking for Senior Secondary Students (Years 11 and 12).

Stage 4 (Years 7 and 8)

Students learn about the nature of Scripture and its portrayal of the story of the people of God; the life, teachings, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ; the nature and mission of the local and universal Church, and its history and teachings; the action of God in creation; the reality of good and evil in the world. Incorporated in each unit are opportunities for spiritual reflection, prayer and liturgy.

Stage 5 (Years 9 and 10)

Stage 5 is compulsory.  Students complete 200 hours of the NSW Board Endorsed Course, Catholic Studies.  This course is the Stage 5 component of the Sydney Archdiocesan designed Religious Education Curriculum.
