Many opportunities exist for St Ursula’s students to experience leadership roles during their years at the College through participation in sporting teams, extra-curricular groups or by being elected to the Student Leadership Team. The formal leadership program runs from Term 4 of one year to the end of Term 3 of the following year so that all elected student leaders have the opportunity to work as a team for a whole year. Every Year 7-11 Pastoral Class elects a Class Councillor who represents them on Student Committees which are led by elected Year 12 Captains, who in turn are led by the College and Vice Captains. The Student Committees are: Liturgy, Social Justice, Environment, Student Representative Council (SRC), Debating and Public Speaking, Creative Arts, Sport, and the four House colours of Amaroo, Dulkara, Girralong and Mirrabooka. Each committee works in consultation with a Staff Mentor.
Both the Junior and Senior Leadership teams participate in leadership programs which help foster an understanding of what it means to be a Christian leader within an Ursuline school. During the course of their year all elected student leaders attend regular committee meetings and participate in a variety of initiatives, developed, promoted and officiated by the students themselves such as Project Compassion initiatives during Lent as well as Clean Up Australia and Environment Week.
As not every student can be elected to a leadership position, leadership as a life choice is actively encouraged through the College’s Mission statement and motto where St Angela Merici’s firm belief in women as being change agents within society is clearly expressed; ‘Serviam – I will serve’ is at the core of every leadership experience and opportunity within the College which in turn empowers all our students to reach their potential.
