Tournament of the Minds (TOMS) is a fun and exciting, national problem solving program for teams of seven students from Years 7 to 10. Students solve open-ended challenges (a Long Term and a Spontaneous Challenge) from one of the following disciplines:

  • Language Literature
  • Maths Engineering
  • Social Science
  • Information Technology

Teams are required to work together on a Long Term Challenge for six weeks without assistance from teachers, parents or peers.  They are encouraged to explore ideas and produce their best possible solution.  They develop original ways to commuicate this response as they work within pre-determined material and staging demands.  They must also follow strict challenge criteria, administrative requirements and of course they must be ready by Tournament Day!  Students present their ideas within ten minutes, to a panel of judges and an audience.  They also solve a four minute Spontaneous Challenge and present this to a panel of judges, without an audience.

The entire TOMS experience requires great team work and creative and criticial thinking.
